Facility Characteristics: This internship offers experience in assessment, treatment and documentation for patients who present a wide variety of medical diagnoses. Case mix can include: brain injury, spinal cord injury, pediatric oncology, orthopedic, and respiratory diseases and disorders, as well as general medical and surgical cases. Patients range in age from birth through age 21. Music is used therapeutically in the areas of cognitive, motor, communication, social/emotional and spiritual development. 
Training Information: The philosophy of the program is eclectic. Interns function as members of the treatment team in planning patient care, educating caretakers, and referring the patient to outpatient therapy if warranted. Additionally, interns receive professional development training and training in interview skills. Interns observe, co-lead and lead individual sessions and group experiences in our play areas. The opportunity to observe a Certified Child Life Specialist in pre-operative play and medical play techniques is available. Co-Treatment opportunities with other allied health specialties are also available and encouraged.

Facility Characteristics: East Jefferson General Hospital has been meeting the needs of Jefferson Parish since 1971. It is accredited by Joint Commission and became Louisiana’s first Nurse Magnet Hospital in 2002. East Jefferson General Hospital is located in Metairie, LA. Metairie is a suburb of New Orleans. New Orleans is only a 5-10 minute drive from Metairie. Intern’s own reliable transportation is recommended for the Greater New Orleans area; however, East Jefferson General Hospital is located along a bus route in Jefferson Parish. The Music Therapy program is currently implemented on the Geriatric Behavioral Health unit. This is a locked 12 bed unit serving ages 65 years and older. Primary diagnoses include: dementia with behavioral disturbances, major depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. The philosophy of this program is cognitive behavioral therapy with a humanistic and person-centered approach. 
Training Information: This internship offers experience in patient assessment, treatment planning, documentation of patient progress, Music Therapy group sessions, reporting on patient progress in weekly Inter-Disciplinary Team meetings, and weekly supervision with the internship Director. The majority of Music Therapy interventions are group sessions; however interns will have the opportunity to engage in 1:1 interventions as needed by the patients. Interns have the opportunity to observe and/or co-treat with pet therapy and chaplain-led spiritual groups. Interns work closely with nurses, nursing assistants, social workers, and a psychiatrist on a daily basis. The opportunity to co-lead/lead group sessions on an Adult Psych Unit and an Adult Day Care program is available. East Jefferson General Hospital requires a legal affiliation agreement with the interns’ college. Facility Characteristics: An internship at River Oaks Hospital promises a wide variety of experiences. The two most unique features are the location and the highly specialized programs. New Orleans is a city with a rich history, cultural background, and best known for its' rich musical heritage. The city's old world charm, combined with all the luxuries of a major city, makes the crescent City, also known as "N'awlins," a most unique place to spend 6 months. Cajun cooking, crawfish, Dixieland music, and the French Quarter are just a few of the attractions that come to mind. For the intern who is fortunate enough to be here through the Mardi Gras season, "le bon temps roule" ! The specialized programs at the hospital include the Masters and Johnson Program for Trauma and Compulsions, and a specialized unit for the treatment of eating disorders. Training Information: The Activity Therapy Department includes 3 art therapists, and 4 music therapists. In addition, there are clinicians trained in psychodrama. All modalities are available to the student to observe. Students will be trained to lead music therapy groups with all populations. Facility Characteristics: Terrebonne Association for Retarded Citizens is located 40 miles west of New Orleans and provides services to developmentally disabled individuals who function in the range of mild, moderate, severe and profound with varying levels of physical handicaps.
Training Information: The intern will work with a wide range of clients from our infant program to rehabilitation clients. A varied type of program from school sessions to adult performance-oriented groups is available.
